St. Polten, Austria’s oldest town and youngest federal capital (of lower Austria), is situated on the banks of the Traisen River, in the plains between the Danube River and the Alpine foothills. It is the largest city in lower Austria and has a population of approximately 50,000 inhabitants.
This historic town is an important commercial and industrial centre of Austria. Textile and paper industry are the mainstay of the economy. The city is characterized by a continental climate with warm summers and extremely cold winters.
St. Polten has a long and rich history. The oldest region of the city is built on the site of the ancient Roman city, Aelium Cetium, which dates back to the second century. The place received an impetus in 1689, when eminent baroque architects such as Jakob Prandtauer and Joseph Munggenast moved here.
