The uniqueness of the place lies in the historical city centre and the numerous buildings exhibiting Baroque architecture. The most significant of these are the Carmelite Monastery and the baroque burgher houses on Herrenplatz and Fuhrmanngasse.
Some of the contemporary architectural attractions are the government section (designed by Ernst Hoffmann), the Sound Tower, the Festival House, the Provincial Library, and the Provincial Museum.
The areas surrounding the city worth a visit include the calm and serene village of Lilienfeld, the monastery in Herzogenburg and the Alpine resort towns of Lackenhof and Waidhofen, both of which offer excellent hiking and skiing facilities.
