Vienna has over 1.6 million inhabitants who commute by train. The modern underground network goes back to 19th century of urban steam railway lines which was built to connect the many mainline railways that served the Austro Hungarian Empire. There are three phases, phase one has U1 and U2 lines and phase 2 has U3 and U6 lines that ravel underneath to and fro. Phase 3 has the northern U1 extension and U2 eastern extension.
