Wels is the second largest city of the state of Upper Austria. It is located in the north of Austria on the banks of Traun River, near Linz. The city lies at an altitude of 317 m and has a population of around 30,000 inhabitants.
Wels is characterised by a mild continental climate with warm and pleasant summers and cold winters.
Founded in the Neolithic era, Wels acquired significance during the Roman reign due to its strategic location and was called Ovilava at the time. Today, it is an important trading and commercial centre. The economy here is supported largely by food processing, dairy and textile industries.
