Brest: Attractions and more...
The largest tourist attraction of the city is the impressive Soviet war memorial built on the site of the 1941 battle, in rememberance of defenders of the island Hero-Fortress.
Moreover, an archeological museum of the old city Berestyre is located on the southern side of the island, showing buildings and objects from the 11th - 13th century, discovered during excavations in the 1970’s.
Brest also hosts the first Belarusian outdoor railway museum. A Holocaust memorial is dedicated to the murdered Jews of the Brest ghetto.
Belavezhskaya-Pushcha National Park, which lies 70 km north of Brest and can be easily reached by public transport, is a nature reserve of world importance. This ancient forest is a sanctuary for the rare European bison. Excursions by horse and cart into the forest are an important attraction. There is also a museum and a zoo.
