Ghent, the flower city and the university town of Belgium, is lined with cobbled streets and stunning ancient buildings. St Michielsbrug provides a beautiful vista of the city’s typical skyline of ornate medieval rooftops. A climb atop the Belfort tower also provides a stunning aerial view of the entire city.
Gravensteen, with ascetic walls and imposing towers, is a former military fortress that was built in the twelfth century. Important museums in Ghent are the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, SMAK and Designmuseum.
The city is host to some big cultural events such as the Gentse Feesten, I Love Techno, Flanders International Film Festival and Festival van Vlaanderen. Also, every five years, the hugely successful botanical exhibition ‘Gentse Floraliën’ draws many visitors.
Vrijdagmarkt, a large medieval square, hosts a traditional Belgian market and also includes lots of bars and cafes, serving delectable food.
