Hasselt is home to numerous historic buildings; it has a modernised city-centre and a lively night life. The Grote Markt is lined with numerous terraces and sidewalk cafes and also has the famous house, T’ Sweert (the sword), which is one of the oldest timbered houses in the Low Countries.

The significant churches that merit a visit include St Quentin’s Cathedral, a Romanesque styled church, dating from the twelfth century and the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk which was originally built in the fourteenth century.

The important museums in the city include the National Genever Museum, which showcases the complete history and production of Belgium’s national drink, the Stellingwerff-Waerdenhof Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum.

The city of Hasselt is a shopper’s as well as food connoisseur’s paradise. The pedestrian streets here are lined with popular designer brands as well as independent boutiques.
