Aalst is very well known for its carnival festivities and this festival is celebrated per year in the month of February.  There is an election of a prince Carnaval who is allowed to rule the city for three consecutive days. Moreover, there is also a big parade which crosses the city on Sundays. There is the Carnaval Tuesday which is known as the day of the ‘Voil Jeannetten’, which is men dressed as women. These festivities end in a traditional manner with the “Burning of the Doll”, which happens on Tuesday evening.

There is popular St. Martin’s Collegiate Church built in Gothic style and dates back to 1480. There are paintings by Rubens in the church and has a beautiful tabernacle dated back to 1605. There is the belfry in the town hall which is considered as one of the oldest and the most handsome of Flanders and it contains a 52 bell carillon. There is also the statue of Dirk Martens who was the first book printer in the Netherlands.
