The Church of Notre-Dame de Bon Secours in Brussels, Belgium is a great example of the kind of architecture created in the Flemish Baroque period. With its translation meaning the “Church of Our Lady of Assistance,” the building is one of the most beautiful and unique in Brussels.
The Church of Notre-Dame de Bon Secours is still very active. It holds services on a regular basis and offers a wide variety of religious activities. It is also known for its tranquility, as many people go there to pray silently and find inner peace. This attraction is worth a visit if you are an architecture buff in Brussels. But be sure to remain quiet as a church mouse when you enter, as there will probably be people praying.
While it is considered to be Classic Baroque design, the Church of Notre-Dame de Bon Secours differs from the period’s quintessential churches in a couple of different ways. The first is its hexagonal form. Most domes of churches and cathedrals designed in the Baroque period were given an oval form. The second oddity is that this church’s interior has five naves. This is uncommon because most Baroque churches have just one central nave, with two smaller aisles on either side of it.
