The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a small gothic church located in Brussels, Belgium. The building dates back to the 1400’s, and was originally part of a convent. In 1580 the church was ruined by invading Protestants, but was eventually rebuilt. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was revamped only half a century ago, but its architecture and decorations were made to reflect that of the 15th century.

Interestingly enough, the construction of this small church was sponsored by a guild of Belgian bakers in the 1400’s. While it is one of the oldest churches in Brussels, the (relatively) recent excavations that occurred during its refurbishment revealed another sanctuary under the building’s foundation. It is believed that this sanctuary was built by the Knights Templar in the 13th century.

Before you go in the church, take note of the small sculptures of St. Mary Magdalene holding the baby Jesus. Attached to the main church is the Chapel of St. Anne, a Baroque building originally positioned on rue de la Montagne that was rebuilt and added on to the Church of St. Mary Magdalene during the restoration. If you are fascinated with secrets of the past, then this spot is a definite must-see.
