Located in Sablon Square, Église Notre Dame du Sablon (Church of Our Lady of Sablon) is one of Brussels’ newer Gothic churches. Built in true Belgian form, this Roman Catholic place of worship is decorated with several stained glass windows and white marble.
The Church of Our Lady of Sablon is a Parish Church that was constructed in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The church was restored with extreme care. Originally, it was commissioned by the Guild of Archers in Brussels. It also features several statues of important Catholic Saints that are (to say the least) extremely elegant and well-sculpted. The most notable sculpture of this church is the Statue of the Madonna, a piece that was said to be “perfect” in many religious circles.
Inside the building, visitors can view the private chapel of the Von Thurn und Taxis family, who contributed significantly to the European postal service.
The church’s location is in a spot where Brussels’ visitors will want to go, as there are many great shops, chocolate stores, and bars in Sablon Square. This is an ideal place to check out if you want an authentic Belgian tourist experience mixed with a little history.
