Brussels: Monuments and Historic Buildings

St. Michael & St. Gudula Cathedral is situated at the Treurenberg hill where the Duke of Brabant transferred the relics of Saint Gudula from the downtown church. This church is now one of the main ones in Brussels.

The Duke ensured that the church was run by priests on a daily basis. There is a large staircase from where the 3 gates of the entrance are accessible. There are twelve pillars inside and triple lancet glass stained windows which represent the typical gothic style.

The choir area is dark as there are small openings in the windows here and here one can see pictures of the various rulers namely Charles V, Philip II of Spain, Philip the Beautiful, Philibert of Savoy, Margaret of Austria and Maximilian of Austria.

In the northern chapel one can see pictures of Francois I of France, Ferdinand I, Louis of Hungary and Joao III of Portugal. The church has been renovated several times in the twentieth century.
