Located near the European Parliament complex in the Léopold district of Brussels, the Antoine Wiertz Museum is a relatively small building that showcases all the works of romantic painter Antoine Joseph Wiertz. Wiertz was somewhat of a controversial character, as many of his paintings depict peculiar scenes or strange and dark situations. But thanks to his protector, Pierre-Joseph de Paul de Maibe, Wiertz also was one of the few painters of the 19th century that received an annual stipend from William I of the Netherlands for his art.
The museum offers an atmosphere that preserves feel of the romantic artistic movement quite perfectly. Today the Antoine Wiertz Museum is one of the Royal Museums of Fine Art in Belgium, along with the Constantin Meunier Museum, and the Museums of Modern and Ancient Art.
The building contains 220 paintings, and receives a small handful of visitors per day. It is also conveniently located near Luxembourg railway station, making it fast and easy to get to. So, if you are planning an outing that is low key, but still interesting and stimulating, then perhaps you should swing by the Antoine Wiertz Museum for a taste of 19th-century romanticism.
