There are industrial area, glassworks, iron and steel glassworks and chemicals and electrical engineering. The city, Charleroi is in the center of a vast coal basin which is known as Pays noir. The city is also known for is publishing industry.
The history of Charleroi starts in 1666. The municipality of the city is situated on both banks of the river Sambre and which is marked by the industrial activities, mainly steel industry and coal mining. Some of the old buildings are worth visiting which were factories that got closed in 1950s.
