Many of the public buildings, villas and temples were built in Charleroi in the Roman period. There are many interesting places to see in Charleroi. One can see the belfry which is one of the World Heritage Sites. Then there is the Maison Doree which was built in 1899 by Alfred Frere, an Art Nouveau architect.
The city is also home to many museums like fine arts, photography and glass. This city is known by the name Heart of the Black Country as the city is named for its coal mines. This city shares the title of capital of the Belgian comics with Brussels.
While traveling to this city, one has to know that this city is divided into 2 parts, lower town and upper town. One can visit some of the nicest places in the city like the Charleroi Sud station, the neoclassical St Anthony Church and the Passage de la gallery in Belgium. This gallery was one of the first shopping gallery in the city and houses a second hand bookshops and a big interior decoration shop at present.
