Tourist Guide Genk
The city of Genk is situated in the Belgian province of Limburg near Hasselt, at an altitude of 63 m above sea level; it has a population of approximately 65,000 residents. Located on the Albert Canal, Genk has been distinguished as the friendliest city of Europe by the SEA Tourist Commission.
The city is characterised by a temperate climate, with warm summers and cold winters. The place does not receive much rainfall.
It is believed that Genk originated as a Celtic village and was converted to Christianity around the tenth century. The inconspicuous village came into light after a huge amount of coal was discovered here. Since the closing down of the coal mines, various new industries have developed; the most important being the Ford Motor Company. The town has now established itself as the industrial centre of Belgium.
