The city of Genk is home to a multicultural population and has a very modern and cosmopolitan vibe; this makes it in ideal destination for a weekend getaway.
Bokrijk, an open-air museum showcasing reconstructed nineteenth century buildings from all over Flanders, is the biggest tourist attraction here. The old coal mines of Zwartberg, Waterschei and Winterslag, accompanied by the huge black mountains of soil and coal remnants that were dug up are also worth a visit.
Splendid landscapes environing the city have earned it the title of ‘The Green City’. The city constitutes several parks and recreational areas such as De Maten nature reserve, Heempark, the Molenvijverpark (Mill Pond Park) and the Kattevennen recreational area.
Genk is also home to a wide range of art festivals, the most notable being The Motives Festival of contemporary jazz.
