The charming and friendly city of Hasselt is the capital of the Belgian province of Limburg. It is located 70 km east of Brussels and has a population of around 68,000. Hasselt has recently been voted as ‘the most sociable city in Flanders’.
The city is characterised by a temperate climate, with warm, dry summers and cold, humid winters.
Hasselt is an ancient city and has been in existence since the seventh century. Its strategic location along the commercial route between Burges and Cologne enabled the city to evolve as an important economic centre. Massive industrialization in the nineteenth century, followed by the construction of the Albert Canal further strengthened Hasselt’s crucial position in the Belgian economy.
