Tourist Guide Leuven
Leuven, the capital of the Flemish Brabant Province, is situated in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, about 20 km east of Brussels.
The city has a population of 90,000 inhabitants and is characterised by a temperate climate, with warm summers and cold winters. It rains almost all through the year.
Leuven is an ancient city. It suffered immense destruction during the World Wars and lost most of its historic monuments. These have since been restored and reconstructed, and the place is now a thriving economic and commercial centre of Belgium.
The city is home to the oldest catholic university, founded in 1425. It has a huge student population which imparts vivacity and youthfulness to the town. It is also the brewing capital of Belgium, and the world famous Stella Artois beer is manufactured here.
