Burgas is the second largest city on Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast and is located at the innermost point of the Burgas Bay. It is the largest seaport in the country and was established as a duty-free zone in 1989 to promote trade and tourism. With a population of around 230,000, it is an important centre for tourism, industry and culture.
Its climate is moderate continental with an average summer temperature of about 28°C. While winters are mild, the constant summer breezes and a water temperature of 25°C makes it the ideal time to visit the city.
Historically, Burgas was an important Roman military colony. Today, despite its attraction as a seaside resort, Burgas is an industrial town. Due to the push to improve its image, the town centre is more tourist-friendly but the suburbs continue to remain dull and dreary.
