Devin, in South Bulgaria, is located in the Rhodope Mountains. It lies in the Vacha valley formed by the Vucha River.
The mountainous surrounding is characterised by steep slopes and numerous gorges, caves and rock formations. Devin is known for its natural mineral springs with water that is clear, odourless, potable, mildly mineralised and with temperatures between 37°C and 44°C.
Situated at an altitude of around 1,000 m above sea level, Devin has a continental climate with an average temperature of 10.5°C and heavy rainfall all year round.
The city was first inhabited by the Thracians around the fifteenth century. Two hundred years later, many Christian inhabitants were forced to convert to Islam. Today, with an approximate population of 8,000, Devin has managed to keep the Bulgarian traditions and language alive.
