Sandanski is located in south-western Bulgaria along the banks of the Bistritsa River. It is situated at an altitude of 224 m along the Pirin Mountains
Winter temperatures average around -4°C, which makes the summer, with temperatures ranging between 14°C and 19°C , the ideal time to visit. The water in the abundant natural mineral springs maintains temperatures between 33°C and 83°C all year round.
With a population of around 30,000 and its natural springs, Sandanski is known as a quiet centre for relaxation and spa therapy.
The town was called Saint Vrach after two brothers, Kozam and Damyan, who practised folk medicine. The name was later changed to honour Yane Sandanski, who fought for Macedonian freedom from Turkish rule. Another famous native is the Roman slave Spartacus.
