The historic aspect of Sofia begins with the tenth century Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city also boasts the world’s largest Orthodox Church, the Alexander Nevski Cathedral and an early Byzantine church, the Church of St. Sophia. The Sofia Synagogue and the sixteenth century Banya Bashi Mosque highlight the diverse religious history of the country.
Vitosha Park is one of the many parks in the city covering a large section of the mountain. The park offers visitors access to many tennis courts, a cycling track and a visit to the Bulgarian football stadium. The Zapaden Park offers several sports facilities as well. The Sofia Municipality organises open-air festivals at the Spartak swimming pool.
Sofia offers numerous shopping districts and the chance to visit Tzum, the largest and oldest department store in the city. Several restaurants, nightclubs and casinos offer tourists entertainment even after the sun goes down.
