Veliko Turnovo, in central northern Bulgaria, is the administrative centre of the Veliko Turnovo Province. Located along the Yantra River, the 4,662 square kilometre city is bound by four hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, Momina Krepost and Sveta Gora. Climbing the Sveta Gora hills offers a panoramic view of the city.
The city sits at an altitude of around 325 m and the annual temperatures here range from -5°C to 30°C with 100 to 270 mm of rain every month.
Historically, the city, then known as Turnovo, was considered ‘second only after Constantinople’. In 1965, it was renamed Veliko Turnovo, or ‘The Great Turnovo’. Today, with a population of around 295,000, Veliko Turnovo is an important centre for culture and tourism and an important administrative and communication centre for northern Bulgaria.
