The Maritime Museum is situated at St.John’s Castle and is open from 9 to 1 in the winters and 9 to 4 in the summer. Monday is a holiday.
The St. John’s Castle at Mul is a large fortress which was built in the town to protect it against the waves of the sea and enemies approaching the town from the sea.
The Maritime museum was relocated to this castle in 1952. There is a permanent collection of four thousand objects in the museum which depict the naval history of Dubrovnik and its nearby regions.
There are ship models displayed from the 17th, 18th and 19th century along with nautical instruments, cannons, weapons, flags, figureheads, log books and others.
There is a library in the museum which has a rare collection of important archival material as well as valuable information about the history of Dubrovnik.
The important projects which have been held here in recent years include the exhibition of shipbuilding tradition in Dubrovnik accompanying the ninth symposium theory and Praxis of shipbuilding, the heritage of wood shipbuilding in Croatia, the last sailing vessels in Peljesac and Dubrovnik and more.
