Krk Island, in Croatia, is part of the Kvarner Archipelago in the Adriatic Sea. It is connected to the mainland by road, sea and air.
The 409 square kilometre island’s population of around 16,400 reside largely in the northern part of the island where the land is forested and more fertile. The island’s highest peak, the 569 m Obzova, is located on the southern part, which is rocky and thickly forested.
The mild sea-influenced climate is apparent in the west of the coastline with average temperatures of around 5°C in January and 24°C in July. The Omisalj and Ponikve Lakes offer a ready supply of freshwater to the island.
The main towns of Krk, Baska, Malinska, Njivice and Punat lie along the coast. Apart from farming, fishing, hunting and wine production, the island also has petrochemical plants and shipbuilding yards.
