Rab Island, in Croatia, lies in the northern Adriatic Sea between Krk Island and Pag Island. Its population of around 9,200 is spread between the town of Rab and the villages of Lopar, Mundanija, Supetarska Draga, Kampor, Banjol, Palit and Barbat.
The 93 square kilometre island has mild winters and hot summers. While it rains throughout the year, it is counted as one of the sunniest places in Europe. The months around July, when the temperature is around 23°C on average, is the peak tourist season.
The first instance of its recorded history dates back to the 360 BC. Rab became an Italian concentration camp during World War II where over a thousand people were killed. A memorial complex in Kampor marks this event.
Tourism has also replaced fishing for the inhabitants and the island is credited as the pioneer of the nudist movement.
