Rijeka, a seaport in Croatia, is located on the northern coast of the Kvarnar Gulf. The city is also known by the Italian name of Fiume. Both words mean ‘river’.
Located in the Primorska-Goranska County, the terrain surrounding the city is mountainous. Being so close to the Adriatic Sea, the city experiences classic Mediterranean climate. The average temperature in January is around 5°C and it touches 29°C in July.
The city was formerly ruled by Hungary; later by Italy, who named it Fiume. Yugoslavia resumed control of the city in 1947, and in 1991, it became a Croatian city.
With a population of around 240,000, Rijeka is an important Croatian seaport and a centre for industry, farming, forestry and fishing. The climate and the tourist-friendly services make it an important centre for the Adriatic tourist traffic as well.
