The city centre begins at the pier and is called the Square of the Republic of Croatia. The Radio Rijeka building is significant because it was here that the Resolution of Rijeka was passed. The oldest monument in the city is the Stara Vrata or the Old Gate. Remnants of baroque architecture can be seen inside and outside the Church of the Assumption of our Lady. A Romanesque bell tower stands outside this church.
Rijeka abounds with cultural events in terms of Seafarer’s Day in August and the Biennial of Young Artists exhibition from July to September. Large crowds are also drawn here for business events like the Spring Fair in April, Automobile Fair in May and the North Adriatic Fair in October.
The Old Town is a centre for concerts and theatre performances in the summer and the Rijeka Carnival in February.
Swimming, charter boats and dive centres complete the Croatian Adriatic experience.
