During the Roman period, Umag was known as Umacus. Today, the Old Town’s narrow winding streets and the picturesque squares are the only remnants of this legacy. The Dante Gallery, which opened in 1985, houses several modern works of art.
Umag has several important traditional events. The folk feast dedicated to St. Pelegrin, the patron saint of the city, is an annual event in May. The Assumption of Our Lady, the Summer Concert and the classical music concerts in the parish church and some of the more famous local cultural events.
The city is known for the annual Croatia Open, the clay court ATP Tour event held at Stella Maris Camp in July. Besides tennis, tourists can choose from a range of sporting activities from football and bowling to hunting, riding and mini golf. Water sports offered in the city include yachting, water skiing, windsurfing and diving.
