Zadar, in Croatia, is located on the Adriatic Sea. There are more than 300 islands just off its coast. The city enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with temperatures dropping to around 6.5°C in January and averaging around 25°C in July.
During World War II, Zadar became one of the best-fortified cities in the world under Nazi Germany. Unfortunately, it was bombed 72 times by Britain and the United States armed forces. After the war, it became part of Yugoslavia. The large Italian population left the city when this happened.
Today, with a population of around 81,000, Zadar is a major centre for tourism, sea trade, farming, fishing, mechanical engineering and banking. It is also the seat of both a Catholic and an Orthodox bishop.
