Tourist Guide Famagusta
Famagusta, in Cyprus, is located on the east coast of the island. Situated to the east of Nicosia, between Cape Greco and Eloea, it is the capital of the Famagusta District. It is located in the Turkish-controlled half of the island, recognised by Turkey as part of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The city has a population of around 39,000 and there are no legal Greek Cypriot residents.
Hot and dry summers and wet, warm winters characterise the island’s Mediterranean climate. Tourists are advised to avoid the middle of summer because of its heat and humidity. With temperatures averaging around 24°C, spring is probably the best time to visit.
Since the Turkish invasion in 1974, Varosha, which was the modern part of the city, lies deserted and closed off. Turkish Cypriots continue living to the north of this area.
