Tourist Guide Nicosia
Nicosia has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century, although its origins date back 5000 years to the Bronze Age.
It lies on the central Mesaoria Plain of the of the island with the spectacular Kyrenia mountains to the north, with the unmistakable 'Pentadaktylos’ (the five-fingered peak).
Being the seat of Government and the cultural centre of Cyprus, the city has two faces: ‘the old town’, surrounded by thick Venetian walls over 400 years old, and the modern city with a cosmopolitan population of 170,000.
Eleftheria Square in the city centre links the ancient walled city with the modern city outside, where offices, hotels, restaurants and gardens mix with the elegant old colonial buildings.
