Also known as Prague's Jerusalem Synagogue, the Jubilee Synagogue was designed by famous architect Wilhelm Stiassny, and is a cornerstone in the history and culture of the Czech Republic. Having been built in 1906, this Art Nouveau place of worship still serves its religious function, and provides regular service for the Jewish community.
It is referred to as the “Jerusalem Synagogue” due to its location on Prague's Jerusalem Street, and it serves as the replacement temple for the Zigeuner Synagogue, which was demolished as part of an urban redevelopment effort in the early 20th century. Having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Stiassny was well-known for his work building Moorish revival churches, as he had also done other similar buildings in Vienna and Slovakia. For this project, Stiassny collaborated with Alois Richter, the man responsible for constructing the Vinohrady Synagogue, also in Prague.
The building was made to accolade the silver Jubilee of Austria's Emperor Franz Joseph. Recently, Stiassny's Jubilee Synagogue was renovated, and began letting in non-Jewish visitors and tourists regularly. This is a great place to check out if you want to know more about Prague's former Bohemian culture, as well as its Old Jewish Town area in the early 1900's.
