Made up of ten different buildings, the National Museum (Národní museum) in Prague serves as the historic bookkeeper for the Czech Republic. Founded in 1818 by Kašpar Maria Šternberg and František Palacký, a couple of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century, the museum now is home to over 14 million artifacts.

The National Museum features items that illustrate the development of natural history, literature, art, and music of the Czech nation; with objects that date back as early as the 10th century CE. Among its natural history collections are items that pertain to a wide variety of studies, including mineralogy, paleontology, botany, and archeology.

Because the museum is so colossal, many people aren’t up to the challenge of touring the whole place in one trip. If this applies to you, then be sure to hit the department of Prehistory and Protohistory, as well as the Department of Ethnography. Also check out the Department of Theater, as it offers extensive insight into the Czechoslovakian performance culture of the 18th century.

This is a superb destination if you’re looking to expand your knowledge of Czech trivia, but as the National Museum in Prague is so large and extensive, you should probably go there with a specific itinerary
