Originally a performance that was connected to the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels, Laterna Magika is the name of Prague’s former National Theatre, as well as the offbeat presentation of director Alfréd Radok and scenographer Josef Svoboda. The core of the show is the synthesis of both film and theatrical performance elements into one multi-genre, new media exhibition.

This particular show is considered to be the key in the development of modern Czech theater. An assortment of renowned characters, directors, choreographers, dramatic advisers and musicians collaborated to institute the principles of Laterna Magika, including Jirí Šlitr, Oldrich František Korte, Zdenek Mahler, Rudolf Rokl and several others.

The show is considered to be a blend of dance, film, and black theater. Because the performances are non-verbal, they can be enjoyed by people of many different nationalities and languages. During more than half a century of Laterna Magika's life, over 30 performances have been produced and the company has toured with its experimental projects all around the globe. If you are looking for a nontraditional artistic experience in Prague, then most everyone who is aware of Laterna Magika will advise you to check it out.
