The National Theatre in Prague is affiliated with most of the important cultural institutions in the Czech Republic. Its artistic practice was established and maintained by the most well-known individuals of Czech society. As it helped shape the Czech Republic we see today, the National Theatre prides itself on being synonymous with progression, culture, and prosperity.
The three main types of performances you can go see at the National Theatre are opera, ballet, and drama. The shows are all drawn from classic Czech heritage. As the theatre itself serves as a symbol for the Czech identity, the laying of its foundation in May of 1868 was an important political moment to the people of Prague.
Over a decade later (1881), the theatre finally opened in honor of Austria’s Crown Prince Rudolf, who was visiting Prague at the time. In the same year, a fire broke out and much of the building had to be restored. Today the National Theatre in Prague is the place where annual honors are given to exemplary performances in opera, ballet, and dramatic presentation. This is a great place to go for theater lovers and history buffs alike. It also will give you an authentic sense of the Czech Republic’s pride and persona as a nation.
