The history and culture of the Czech Republic is such that most of its towns and cities were built around castles. The city of Strakonice explifies this tradition. This beautiful city lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Volynka and the Otava. It is part of the South Bohemian region.
The main settlement here was established after the Bavors family started building their castle around the end of the 12th century. In later times, the castle became the principal seat of the order of St. John.
Around the 19th century, Strakonice became an industrial centre. The estimated 27000 inhabitants of this city are most renowned for their hand guns, motor bikes and fez hats. The city enjoys a typical continental climate.
