Though most tourists are attracted to the long stretches of sandy beaches, Bornholm is also rich in history. The Hammershus Castle, in the northwest, is the largest fortress in Northern Europe. It is built 74 m above sea level and its perimeter wall is 750 m long. The tower in the fortress is ideal for a view of Sweden and the ocean.
The island houses 15 medieval churches; 300 wooden houses, which were donated by Sweden after World War II, are another unique feature of the island’s architectural history. Dondalen, one of the largest waterfalls of Denmark, is situated in the north.
The many shops and workshops of about 100 artisans living on the island serve as galleries of modern art for the tourists. The Baltic herring is the most popular catch of the island and is innovatively used in the preparation of many local delicacies.
