Christiania was recognised as a legal part of Copenhagen in 1986. It was primarily a site of hippy unlawful tenants.
Christiania has many buildings which are built from scratch using recycled materials. The city is within the limits of Copenhagen's City-Bike network, and tourists can pedal across the harbour from the city centre, exploring all the way.
The Christiania community is where the weird and wonderfully customised bicycles seen around the city first originated. The Church of Our Saviour is located in nearby Christianshayn. The church has a golden spiral tower and for those who climb it the reward is an utterly scintillating view of Copenhagen. Taking photographs is prohibited in the area.
A guided tour can be taken to the city; the tour lasts about two hours and is conducted by local residents. Food and beer are cheaper in Christiania compared to Copenhagen. Expect to see many dogs on the streets as dogs are allowed to roam freely.
