The Kastellet is one of the best preserved fortifications in Northern Europe. It is a Vauban fort, shaped as a pentagram with bastions on each corner and it used to be part of a continuous line of fortifications and bastioned ramparts that encircled Copenhagen.
Its construction was begun at the start of the 17th century and was meant to be a haven where the King could shelter in case of danger: as such it contains a number of other buildings, including a church and a windmill. Today Kastellet is a public, protected area which is used as a park and as a cultural site, but part of it is still used for military purposes.
