National Museum is situated at Frederikshpolms Kanal 12 Ny Vestergade 10, DK-1471 in Copenhagen and is open daily from 10 to 5 except on Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Children under 16 are given free admission to this museum and there are special discounts on Sundays. The museum is also known as Nationalmuseet and lies along Vestergade opposite Glyptothek.
The museum was renovated from 1989 to 1992 making it more spacious and modern. The museum has a glass domed roof, spiral staircases leading to the upper floors and the main building of the museum is connected to the other parts by an enclosed glass walkway.
The museum displays impressive runic stones in one part and has a notable collection of artifacts which illustrate the history of Denmark as well as ethnographical collections from other parts of the world such as Asia, Oceania and Africa.
There is a sun chariot which is more than two thousand years old, Danish porcelain and silver collection of coins and antiques, 18th and 19th century costumes, Gothic and Romanesque church fittings as well as household furnishings.
