Smørrebrød is a highly popular traditional Danish dish; it consists of a slice of dark bread with butter, topped with slices of meat, fish or cheese. Other traditional delicacies include pickled herring, fried sanddab, and other assorted seafood items. Frikadeller (pork only or pork and veal meat balls topped by a brown sauce) is a popular meat dish. Danish coffee and a distilled beverage called akvavit are popular drinks.
