Helsinki’s Uspenskin katedraali, or in English it’s Uspenski Cathedral (Swedish: Uspenskij-katedralen) is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. It is one of the most interesting and astounding sights to be found in this fascinating northern city and comes highly recommended for the itinerary of even the most time-pressed visitor.

Designed by the Russian architect Alexey Gornostaev (1808–1862), the cathedral was built after his death in 1862–1868. The cathedral has several valuable icons including a renowned St. Nicolas – The Wonder Maker. This particular icon was unfortunately at the centre of a huge national scandal when it was stolen on 16 August, 2007 between midday and 1 p.m. The shocking aspect being that the theft took place in broad daylight while hundreds of tourists were visiting the cathedral (about half a million tourists visit every year)!

Admission to the Cathedral is free of charge. Bear in mind though that in winter the Cathedral is closed on Mondays.
