Kruununhaka is an area of Helsinki conveniently located between the city centre and the Harbour on Finland’s enigmatic eastern coast. It came to be where it is when Helsinki was moved from the earlier location in the mid-1660s and it has been renowned from the very beginning, as a neighbourhood that housed some of the city’s leading residents included city and state officials.

There are a host of interesting landmarks in the area and central among them are many buildings of the University of Helsinki. If you are like me then universities are always one of the touchstones of any city, a great place to meet people and get great access to news about what’s really going on in a place.

On top of these there is the well known Pohjoisranta waterfront in Kruununhaka, which is historically important to the city and a nice place to be for the tourist. The Presidential Palace is another spot not-at-all to be overlooked with its grand white facade. Any trip to the area must be crowned in this writers opinion by some time viewing Helsinki’s majestic Cathedral.
