Sate your appetite
Helsinki's restaurants offer everything from Michelinstarred haute cuisine
to Tex-Mex. Be sure to try out also some traditional Scandinavian food, Russian
dishes or any number of ethnic and international restaurants. The Helsinki Menu
offers a taste of true
Finnish food culture.
A wide range of clubs and bars offers a choice of atmospheres and price levels.
Pub-crawlers should also check out the Kallio district near the centre. There
is no shortage of special events either, such as the Koneisto Festival of Electronic
Music, the Tuska Festival for heavy music and the fortnight-long Helsinki Festival.
Unique lifestyles and urban subcultures are all a part of this international
metropolis.
Quality shopping
Finnish designer products are a must for the serious shopper and can be found
at, for example, Ril's, Vuokko Nurmesniemi's and Marimekko's boutiques. Unique
Finnish jewellery can be admired and purchased at Kalevala Koru's and Tillander's
fi ne establishments. Designer products and furniture are available at Skanno,
Emporium and Design Forum Finland, as well as smaller designer boutiques along
the side streets of Helsinki.
Pedestrian paradise
The majority of Helsinki's cultural establishments and sights are situated
within walking distance of the city centre. Art museums, such as the Ateneum
and the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, are just a stone's throw from the
Senate Square and the best shopping streets. Helsinki's excellent public transportation
makes it easy to reach sights and destinations further afield.
Speciality
Suomenlinna is one of the world's largest maritime fortresses. Built in the
1700s on six islands off the shore of Helsinki, the garrsion town is one of
the most popular sights in Finland. Suomenlinna has been a UNESCO World Heritage
Site since 1991. Suomenlinna offers an unforgettable experience for all ages,
with museums, special events, idyllic cafes and cosy restaurants. Children will
have a great time exploring the many tunnels of the old fortress. It is good
to reserve at least half a day for a visit to Suomenlinna. The vast fortress
is best explored on foot, so prepare for some hiking with good shoes and a windbreaker.
Ferries and waterbuses depart for Suomenlinna from the Market Square three times
an hour during summer. The trip takes fifteen minutes. The municipal ferries
accept the Helsinki Card and regular public transportation tickets.
