Oulu, with a population of 130,000, is the largest and one of the fastest growing cities in Northern Finland. Its location at the mouth of the Oulu River made it accessible for both trade and invasion.
The summer in Oulu is warm and bright with very long days. In the middle of summer, at times, there is light throughout the night. The average temperature is 20°C. But, the Arctic winds blowing in from the sea can make the weather very chilly. In winter, temperatures drop to as low as –15°C.
In the past, Oulu relied mainly on its exports of fur, tar and salmon and had the country’s largest fleet. Today, it is renowned for competence in fields of information technology, telecommunication, etc.
