The neo-classical Oulu Cathedral, characterised by its long steeple, is believed to have the oldest painted portrait of Finland. The Botanical Gardens of the University of Oulu are home to almost 4,000 varieties of plants. A further one thousand tropical species are being reared in two pyramid-shaped greenhouses.
The Kierikki Stone Age Centre in the neighbouring town of Yli-Ii exhibits findings from archaeological digs. The Stone Village replicates life in Finland during the Stone Age.
Pikisaari, an island off the harbour, still has a number of old wooden houses which have now been converted to cafes, craft shops, etc. Neptunus, a boat converted into a restaurant, permanently stands at the harbour.
Finland’s first street train, the Potnapekka, winds around the quieter streets and cycle tracks for a summarised tour of the city. Theatrical performances are held on the lush grounds of Hupisaaret Park in summer.
