Savonlinna had been founded in the year 1639; with its base revolving around Olavinlinna. Erik Axelsson Tott was the person who founded the castle in the year 1475 with an objective of protecting Savonia as well as for controlling unstable border which existed between ‘Kingdom of Sweden’ and ‘Russian adversary’ on its part. Amongst all the trial and tribulations, Savonlinna went in to the hands of Finland in the year 1812 as a portion of ‘Old Finland’.
Savonlinna is located at a distance of 335 Km from Helsinki; as far as road transport is concerned. One can reach there within 4 hours by train. If domestic airport is made use of, journey to and from Helsinki takes around 1 hour by plane.
In the year 1973, numicipality of ‘Saaminki’ got consolidated with ‘Savonlinna’.
