Savonlinna: Attractions and more...
Savonlinna cathedral can be referred to as one of the neo-Gothic churches that had got damaged due to bombing in 1939-40 at the time of ‘Winter War’. The reconsecration took place in the year 1949. As such, it’s a place of historical importance.
Olavinlinna Castle
This castle was founded in the year 1475 by none other than Erik Axelsson Tott; who governed Viipuri Castle at that time. The castle had got annexed to ‘Russia’ in the year 1743; following Northern War. After that, it got enlarged as well as strengthened numerous times. One can enter this castle via one of the vaulted gateways towards the west. This, in turn, leads to a petite inner courtyard; i.e. the most ancient portion of castle. The restoration of this castle has been done in an excellent manner. It contains loads of rooms which can be used for conferences and receptions. Great Hall is one of them.
